PassageWorks Foundation Course, Boulder, CO
Date: June 09-11 2012
Location: Boulder/Denver, CO- TBA
In this highly experiential course, we will explore core practices and principles for supporting students’ social, emotional, and academic development and sustaining ourselves as educators. Based on the model developed by the PassageWorks Institute and Rachael Kessler, this course will offer classrooms strategies, theoretical frameworks, and opportunities to share with and learn from colleagues.
Course Focus:
- How to create a learning community where students can increase focus and motivation, develop empathy and compassion, and experience a sense of meaning and purpose
- The integration of focusing activities, communication skills, play, silence, expressive arts and community building into any classroom
- The theory and practice of social and emotional learning (SEL)
- How to welcome the inner life of students and teachers into school
- Stages of group development and methods appropriate to each grade level
- How to develop our own “teaching presence” (open heart, respectful discipline, being present, and emotional range) and reconnect with our “spark” for teaching
Methods learned in this course can be integrated into your classroom and do not represent “something else” to teach, but a heartfelt way to breathe new life into what and how you teach.
