PassageWorks Foundation Course (22-hours)

In this highly experiential course, we explore core practices and principles for supporting students’ social, emotional, and academic development and sustaining ourselves as educators. Based on the model developed by the PassageWorks Institute and Rachael Kessler, this course will offer classroom strategies, theoretical frameworks, and opportunities to share with and learn from colleagues.

The course will address:

o   How to create a learning community where students can increase focus and motivation, develop empathy and compassion, and experience a sense of meaning and purpose

o   The integration of focusing activities, communication skills, play, silence, expressive arts and community building into any classroom

o   The theory and practice of social and emotional learning (SEL)

o   How to welcome the inner life of students and teachers into school

o   Stages of group development and methods appropriate to each grade level

o   How to develop our own “teaching presence” (open heart, respectful discipline, being present, and emotional range) and reconnect with our “spark” for teaching

o   How to build and sustain a thriving faculty culture

Note: The Foundation Course is the pre-requisite for the useage of any of our K-12 Transitions Curricula

"PassageWorks was an essential part of me becoming a member of Doyle Elementary from the get-go. I hadn’t even spent a day teaching with this staff, and already, I felt like a member of the Doyle family. I couldn’t have done that without PassageWorks. It was a great “ice-breaker” for me as a new teacher. I think that schools should have this kind of thing more often. I am very thankful to have a principal who cares enough to implement such a program in our school."
