End of Year Renewal

spring-blooming-21In these last few months of the school year, the speed and pace can feel wildly unmanageable at times.  As “spring fever” hits, we may find it increasingly more difficult to remain in the moment and be present for our students and ourselves.  In this way, slowing down and engaging in self-care is even more essential at this time.

The following activities can support us to renew ourselves.

  • Take time to celebrate successes and major milestones.
  • Spend time in nature.
  • Start a gratitude journal and note one new thing every day.
  • Avoid multitasking.
  • Walk, run or garden with the intention of relaxing your mind.
  • Organize or decorate your physical work environment so that it is uplifting.
  • Start the day by reading an inspiring quote, passage, or poem to yourself, to another colleague, or to your class.
  • Regularly express gratitude and appreciation to others.
  • Take a few moments between classes to sit quietly in silence.
  • Take three very deep breaths in a row.
  • Journal, draw, paint, or create other visual art.
  • Stop work at regular intervals to take even a short break.
  • Take a five-minute “five Senses walk” outside, in which you notice one specific thing related to each sense.
  • Reflect on your goals and intentions at the start of the day.
  • Take a few minutes at the end of the day to reflect on at least one moment or interaction that went well or that you are grateful for.
  • Acknowledge what is going well in your work and life.
  • As you prepare for your day with your students, go over your student list and consider one thing you appreciate about each student.
  • Consciously engage in practices during school that bring you back to the present. Consider creating a visual reminder to come back to presence.
  • Engage in a contemplative practice.(See examples at www.contemplativemind.org/practices/tree.)
