Announcing The 5 Dimensions of Engaged Teaching

“When we think of what’s right with education, we think of teachers.” – from the Introduction of The 5 Dimensions of Engaged Teaching

Laura & MarkWe are excited to share The 5 Dimensions of Engaged Teaching with you. The book (available May 2013) has been a long time coming and is the result of the efforts of literally hundreds of educators. It has been quite a rewarding and challenging journey to develop and write this book, and we offer our deepest thanks to our writing team and all the teachers and colleagues who have contributed to this project.  Special thanks to the Solution Tree team who believed in the importance of this book and made its publication possible.

The 5 Dimensions of Engaged Teaching offers practices, principles, activities and stories that support you to develop your own internal capacities, bring your authentic self to your teaching, engage your students more joyfully and effectively, and collaborate meaningfully with colleagues. We hope the book will engage your wisdom and experience and assist you to sustain and grow a rewarding teaching practice. We wrote the book with the understanding that we are all on a life-long learning journey. When we learn from both our successes and our challenges in our work, we not only develop our own resilience, but model this kind of learning and growth for our students.

Speaking of learning journeys… As we wrote the book, we found that each time we began to write about a particular dimension, we were immediately challenged to “walk our talk” in regard to the principles we were writing about. For example, when we were writing about Developing Emotional Capacity, we discovered many inspiring and sometimes irritating “learning opportunities” to grow our own emotional intelligence. And when we wrote about the practice of “welcoming the unwelcome,” we experienced a host of obstacles that invited us to see the surprising gifts that emerge from seeing challenges as opportunities for growth. (See our next blog for more on welcoming the unwelcome.)

This book represents our learning journey over many years as we have reflected on our own teaching experiences and listened to and collaborated with educators around the country. We hope that this book will support you to meet each day in the classroom with a greater sense of joy, purpose, and meaning —and that you realize powerful results with your students and colleagues.
